<p><strong>The tourism industry in Malaysia currently ranks as the second biggest foreign exchange earner of the country. As far as the results go, promoting its tourism industry has been one of the country’s success stories. In celebrating Malaysia’s 53 years of nationhood, its tourism industry certainly deserves due recognition for its contributions to the nation in terms of income generation, infrastructure development and job creation.</strong></p>
<div>
<p>Despite encountering various obstacles along the way, the tourism industry has remained resilient. It continues to be an important economic activity benefiting various business areas such as hospitality, transportation, retail trade, recreational and leisure facilities. Its resilience is largely attributed to the active participation of both the public and private sectors in undertaking vigorous promotion and marketing, diversifying target markets, as well as improving competitiveness of tourism products and services to sustain interest among visitors to Malaysia.</p>
<p>The Malaysian Government recognizes the vital role of the tourism industry as a major contributor to its economy. Over the years, the tourism industry in Malaysia has grown significantly, both in terms of tourist arrivals and economic contribution.</p>
<p>From a mere 5.5 million tourist arrivals in 1998, contributing some RM8.5 billion ($2.7 billion) in tourism receipts, Malaysia successfully attracted 23.65 million tourists in 2009. Despite being a challenging year for many countries last year due to various crises such the economic slowdown, Malaysia has shown its resilience in facing such odds by recording a 7.2 per cent increase in tourist arrivals. In fact, the targeted 19 million international tourist arrivals forecast for 2009 was well achieved by October. In terms of receipts, it reached RM53.37 billion ($16.7 billion) in 2009, which represented a 2.8% increase compared to RM49.6 billion ($15.5 billion) in the previous year.</p>
<p>According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) barometer, Malaysia made it into the top 10 countries with the highest international tourist arrivals for 2009. It secured the 9th position, up two notches from the previous year. In the Asian market, Malaysia ranks second after China in terms of tourist arrivals.</p>
<p>The rise in tourist arrivals can also be attributed to other factors such as increased regional travel and greater air services connectivity. The rapid expansion of budget airlines within the region such as AirAsia, ValuAir and Tiger Airways, along with budget hotels, has certainly made traveling more affordable to consumers. In brief, low airfares and attractive holiday packages by low cost carriers have helped encourage greater regional travel.</p>
<p>Over the years, Malaysia has steadily worked its way into the hearts of travelers as a unique holiday destination. It has been chosen as one of the world’s top ten countries for 2010 in Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2010” as well as one of the “Best Value Destinations” for 2010. But it wasn’t the first time Malaysia is being recognized by Lonely Planet. In 2008, it was Lonely Planet’s top pick of countries for best holiday destination. Malaysia was similarly honored by US magazine Global Traveler as Best International Tourism Destination for three consecutive years from 2006 to 2008.</p>
<p>There are many factors that contribute to Malaysia’s appeal as a tourist destination and the success of its tourism industry. Generally, the country’s rich and colorful multi-cultural heritage is a hit with tourists. Malaysia showcases a kaleidoscope of customs, religions, traditions, festivals, arts &amp; crafts and cuisines of the Malays, Chinese, Indians, and various ethnic groups that continues to fascinate visitors from around the world.</p>
<p>Those who love shopping will be pleased to know that Malaysia offers a wide array of quality merchandise that caters to all budgets and tastes. Living up to its fame as a shopping haven, shopping malls and retail outlets around the country offer unbeatable discounts and promotions during the three major shopping carnivals — the Malaysia Grand Prix Sale (held in conjunction with the F1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix), Malaysia Mega Sale and the Malaysia Year-End Sale.</p>
<p>Malaysia is also fortunate to have been endowed with numerous assets and attractions to suit the taste and preference of every visitor. Nature lovers would be mesmerized by the country’s 130 million-year-old rainforests, exotic marine parks, as well as rich biodiversity and ecosystem. Malaysia is also proud to have some of its destinations listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely the Gunung Mulu National Park, Kinabalu Park, and the historical sites of Georgetown and Melaka.</p>
<p>In brief, whether you’re looking for colorful multi-racial culture and delectable cuisine, exciting tourist destinations, ecotourism, homestay, historical heritage, untouched rainforests, pristine beaches and islands or modern shopping centers — you can find them all here. These attractions are complemented by the country’s world-class hospitality services and modern tourism infrastructure.</p>
<p>The Ministry of Tourism Malaysia is also laying great emphasis on developing the homestay program which gives a chance to participants to experience the daily life in a traditional village or kampung. It has been very successful in attracting many foreign tourists, students and non-students alike to visit Malaysia, particularly from Singapore, Japan, Australia and South Korea. From 2006 to May 2010, a total of 102,881 foreign tourists participated in this program. Participants have a choice of close to 3,000 participating homes involving 139 homestay nationwide. The Ministry of Tourism has also carried out the initiative to package homestay with authentic rail journey. Tourists get to experience journey via trains through 21 stations, involving 22 selected homestay.</p>
<p>Other efforts include the promotion of the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) program, which aims to attract more foreign citizens to stay long-term or retire in Malaysia, as well as draw high net-worth individuals to invest in the country. From 2002 to April 2010, the program has successfully attracted 13,871 participants, with majority of them from China, Bangladesh, UK, Japan and Singapore. In order to attract more foreigners to join the program, the Ministry of Tourism set up the Malaysia My Second Home One-Stop Center in May 2006 which is basically a hub to address MM2H-related enquiries and applications.</p>
<p>Malaysia is also becoming a popular destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) due to the availability of excellent infrastructure and facilities in the country.</p>
<p>Other initiatives include the promotion of medical and wellness packages, as well as parks and gardens in Malaysia since the country is blessed with multifarious beautiful and exotic flora and fauna.</p>
<p>Malaysia is also a good value-for-money destination. According to the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2009, Malaysia ranks among the top 32 countries (out of 133). The ranking also placed Malaysia in the 4th spot for Price Competitiveness.</p>
<p>Tourism will continue to be promoted as one of the strategic growth sectors that can help to propel economic growth and create employment. We are working toward increasing the contribution of tourism industry to our National Gross Domestic Product.</p>
<p>The target under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (2011 — 2015) is to improve Malaysia’s position to be within the top 10, in terms of global tourism receipts in 2015. Malaysia also aims to increase the tourism sector’s contribution by 2.1 times, contributing RM115 billion ($36 billion) in receipts and providing 2.7 million jobs in the tourism industry in 2015.</p>
<p>Tourism industry players in Malaysia are set to work harder to achieve the 2015 target. They will strive to attract a larger share of high spending travellers, and capture a higher share of high growth segments, particularly from Russia, India, China and the Middle East, besides increasing the number of tourist arrivals.</p>

<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><em>From a paper by Evelyn Kaur</em></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Introduction</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Overview of tourism sector development</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">In Malaysia, the tourism sector ranks second as a generator of foreign exchange after oil and gas production. This industry has been growing rapidly in the country over the past few years. For example, Malaysia has shown a significant increase of tourist arrivals from countries in Asia government has announced that RM1 billion will be allocated to tourism infrastructure and development for 2006, which will be managed by the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank (SME).</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">This is to develop tourism that;</span></h5>
<ul>
<li>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Minimizes impact</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Builds environmental awareness</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Provides direct financial benefits for conservation</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Provides financial benefits and empowerment for local people</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Respects local culture</span></h5>
</li>
</ul>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Ecotourism in marine parks, a definition</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong>It is important first to clarify what the interpretation of ecotourism practice in marine parks is. Ecotourism in marine parks can be defined as marine ecotourism, which is &#8216;ecotourism that takes place in coastal and marine settings&#8217; (Mike, 1999). This area of ecotourism is exceptionally important, as Malaysia is blessed with breathtaking islands along with white sandy beaches and clear waters, which generates significant revenue for the nation. Moreover, its growth has been assisted, to an extent, by the abundant and rich coral reefs and shallow tropical marine resources in this region.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Ecotourism in Malaysia</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong>Ecotourism is becoming the fastest growing form of tourism in Malaysia, currently making up about 10 per cent of the country&#8217;s tourism revenue , Many government and tourist agencies have adapted their organizations to offering services that are related to ecotourism activities. A high fiscal commitment is also contributed by the Ministry for its development. For instance, a total of RM1,009 billion was allocated for the development of the tourism industry during the Eighth Malaysia Plan [8 MP] (Eighth Malaysia Plan, 2001).</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Malaysia has a wide range of natural assets that makes ecotourism a highly beneficial, sustainable and long-term form of tourism. This includes lakes, mangroves, limestone caves, mountains, waterfalls, islands, wildlife and many others. Despite this fact, there are enormous concerns for the future of ecotourism, as many of the famous ecotourism sites in Malaysia are now so over-used. Some of the examples are Wang Kelian in Perlis (limestone, caves and forests), Kenyir Catchments in Terengganu (lake, boating, trekking and fishing), Pulau Kukup in Johor (mangroves, wildlife, and seafood), Lower Kinabatangan River in Sabah (proboscis monkeys and wildlife), Pulau Redang in Terengganu (fish, coral reefs and an attractive marine environment), Pulau Sipadan in Sabah (fish, coral reefs and an attractive marine environment), and many others. One of the best ecotourism practices have been displayed in the Matang Mangroves Forest in Perak. However, there is still a lack of best ecotourism practices displayed in any of the marine parks in Malaysia.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>The positive viewpoint of ecotourism</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">The United Nations and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have predicted that ecotourism will become the world&#8217;s biggest industry in the future. Thus, if properly implemented, it can provide employment opportunities for locals in the long term. Tourism, being the world&#8217;s largest employer, has already generated almost 200 million jobs or some 10 per cent of jobs globally (Halpenny and Elizabeth, 2002). In Malaysia, this sector provides jobs to many people employed in the hotel, resort and transportation industries, as well as those in restaurant and other tourist-related business (WWF Malaysia, 2005).</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Moreover, it can also bring benefits to rural communities in terms of increased revenue, support for conservation and provide better environmental management. Ecotourism could become central to sustainable development, offering one realistic key solution to the apparent conflict between environmental protection and economic growth .. Besides being a powerful incentive for governments to conserve areas, the ecotourism industry provides an enhanced image for the nation and for the tourism sector as a whole.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>The negative outlook of ecotourism</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Ecotourism can have the same harmful effects as that of mass tourism if tour operators, resorts managers, marine parks officers and other stakeholders, as the main promoters, do not strictly adhere to the precepts of ecotourism . This is due to the fact that there are increased numbers&#8217; of visitors (ecotravelers) to almost all the marine park islands, as a result of increased promotion done by various parties in order to generate economic revenue. When demand rises, further development implemented in the areas that were previously untouched could cause extensive damage. Once destinations become popular, there is often no way to control development activities.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">An enhanced tourism industry also involves many activities that can have adverse environmental effects . Many of these are linked with the construction of general infrastructure and tourism facilities, such as roads and airports, resorts, hotels, restaurants, shops, golf courses and marinas. The negative impact of tourism development can gradually destroy the environmental resources on which it actually depends.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>MARINE PARKS IN MALAYSIA</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>An overview</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">The marine parks were primarily established to conserve and conduct research on the rich biodiversity contained in the marine park waters. However, time has changed over the years and now marine parks have to maintain an uneasy balance between conservation and tourism activities.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH MARINE PARKS</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Issues facing the marine parks</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">The quality of the marine environment is essential to the ecotourism industry and unregulated tourism development can involve many activities that have adverse environmental effects. Negative impact from tourism occurs when the level of visitor use is greater than the environment&#8217;s ability to cope with this use within the marine parks&#8217; limits of acceptable change or carrying capacity (Hardin, 1977). If not properly regulated, the tourism industry has three main impacts, which are: depletion of natural resources, pollution and harmful physical impact.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Some of the main factors contributing to environmental problems in our marine parks are listed below:</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Overcrowding and lack of awareness among visitors:</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">The number of tourists visiting the marine park islands has been increasing over the years. Overcrowding of visitors into the marine parks has been the main culprit of the various accumulated impact on the marine parks&#8217; ecosystem. This is mainly due to the difficulty in briefing all the visitors on the dos and don&#8217;ts while visiting the marine parks. For example, much of the corals on Pulau Payar were damaged as a result of the overwhelming presence of tourists, as the travel operators allowed between 600 and 700 tourists on the island at one time. Diving operators thought only about profits and filling up their boats without worrying about the carrying capacity of the island. In the end, the beaches were overcrowded with snorkelers and divers who accidentally step onto the corals, indirectly causing the environment to degrade. All this has caused the island to become &#8216;sick&#8217; due to neglect and lack of proper enforcement of the ecotourism guidelines. Its sorry state, including the pressure of 14 chalets on the island that have been abandoned since 2002, has prompted the State Government to conduct an immediate study on the health of the island&#8217;s natural environment (New Straits Times, 15/9/2005).</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Another good example of the effects of uncontrolled mass tourism is on Sipadan Island. The conservation of this island has not been maintained to the appropriate standard. On one hand, there is a push to bring in the tourist dollar (particularly foreigners who have more spending power) but on the other, little is done to protect the precious biodiversity which is its main attraction (Star, 23/2/2005). Many problems are caused mainly because of the low awareness of environmental issues among tourists, coastal communities and the other stakeholders (hotel/resort operators, dive operators, tour guides and boat operators). Indeed, the removal of all resorts from the island was a very positive move to allow the island to recover from the exhausting role of playing host to hundreds of visitors over the last 15 years. Nevertheless, without the basic amenities, divers are still landing on this island up to now, causing its environment to further degrade gradually.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">The similar conditions apply to the turtles nesting on the islands in Terengganu and Sabah leading to its near extinction, mainly due to overcrowding of the beach areas with visitors and coastal development activities. Also, the fish feeding activity conducted in most of the marine parks may also disturb their normal feeding patterns and cause stress as the food introduced may not be part of the normal diet. This could alter fish behaviour and have an impact on the ecological balance of species on the reef, especially in Pulau Payar which is famous for its shark feeding attraction.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Environmental degradation:</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">The negative impact of tourism development can gradually destroy the environmental resources on which it very much depends. On many of the marine park islands, amenities such as hotels and chalets have been developed and activities like scuba diving and snorkelling are introduced in the surrounding protected waters to promote ecotourism (Mohammed Mohd. Daud, 1999).</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Thus, without proper environmental responsibility among visitors, resort/chalet operators and other stakeholder; a great deal of destruction is done to the environment. For instance, Table 3 shows a summary of the tourism stakeholders and the impact of unmanaged ecotourism practices in the marine parks.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">An increasing tourist population also demands more freshwater. This can result in water shortages and degradation of water supplies, as well as generating a greater volume of waste water. This has been a contributing factor to the degradation of the corals in most of the islands. Additionally, the inefficient sewage treatment system on the islands has also contributed to 17 environmental degradation. Nutrient runoff has been a significant threat to reefs in the parks, particularly near large population centres. Tourist boat activities have also caused problems to the surroundings. Coral is damage by anchors, discarded refuse, divers and snorkellers and chemical factors from nutrient runoffs; while minimal at some of the sites, are likely to be significant within the parks and will increase with increased tourism.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Effect of land development on coral health:</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Sedimentation is one of the main problems resulting from land development. As more development and land clearing activities have been taking place on the islands and on the mainland, so has sedimentation been on the rise. Many resorts/chalets are built on the islands to compensate for the ever raising number of visitors. Not only this, the construction of general tourism infrastructure and facilities such as roads and airports, golf courses and marinas, can also be linked to over-development activities on the marine parks. For example, development of marinas can cause changes in currents and coastlines; indirectly harming the coral reefs there. In development activities, various characteristics of the marine parks are not considered. Some of these islands are small, for example Perhentian Island which is only 15 sq km in size and yet is one of the major island ecotourism destinations in Malaysia with the most number of chalets/resorts.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Some islands have also experienced the mushrooming of small resorts from over the time, especially in Pasir Panjang and Teluk Dalam area in Redang Marine Park. The island development has led to sedimentation impact on the reefs. Sedimentation at high concentrations can kill the coral colonies, decrease water visibility and discourages snorkellers and divers over the long term.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Lack of coordination:</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">The other problematic issue with the marine park islands is the lack of coordination among the Federal and the State governments. Also there are often conflicting targets and mandates within State government and the managing body of the marine parks, formerly the Fisheries Department and presently under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE). This kind of problem is highlighted by the case of Pulau Tioman and Pulau Payar development plans.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Despite opposition by various parties and NGOs, the marina project construction in Pulau Tioman and the chalet complex construction in Pulau Payar were still approved. The same goes for a similar dual style management in other parks in the Peninsular, where large-scale tour operations are represented by the SEDC (State Economic Development Corporation) and the small-scale tour operations, run mostly by foreigners leasing land from local inhabitants. In contrast, Sabah and Sarawak manage their own marine park areas and have the mandate to control activities both in the terrestrial and marine portions, thus providing integrated and effective site planning and management practices.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>Lack of enforcement:</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">There are shortages of staff both in terms of numbers and professional levels to carry out enforcement in the marine parks. This is especially during peak visiting periods, such as school holidays or public holidays. As a result, there is also concern for the lack of continuous monitoring in the marine parks. Thus, it is difficult to regulate ecotourism guidelines in the marine parks, causing illegal encroachments in their waters. Moreover, there is also no definite role played by the National Advisory Council for Marine Parks and Marine Reserves (NAC) and in handling issues concerning marine parks.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong> </strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;"><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">The trend of increasing visitor numbers to Malaysia&#8217;s Marine Parks is expected to continue, particularly with the successful promotion of nature tourism by the Malaysian Government and various other steps taken to attract tourists. However, it would not be recommended to further increase tourism development and other related activities in some of the major marine park islands.</span></h5>
<h5><span style="color:#000000;">Thus, the relevant stakeholders should start carrying out certain moves to address these gaps. This could be done by stricter enforcement of regulations, restricting the total number of visitors to the park, controlling the number of dive groups, restricting large groups of visitors to certain areas of the park, increasing the frequency of patrols around the marine park area, increasing the number of staff or officers on duty, putting up more boards sign on dos and don&#8217;ts, designing zones for various recreational activities and enforcement of stricter controls on development projects on the marine parks. Greater emphasis should be placed on the enforcement of regulations designed to protect marine resources, protection of marine biodiversity and in management of the shoreline development. Examples of best ecotourism practices from selected countries like Australia, Costa Rica and Cuba can also be applied in Malaysia.</span></h5>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>August 12, 2010</p>
<p>in Software  There are several advantages of getting an online booking system no matter you do have a small or large business. Today offline advertising is good but not enough. An active online business platform can help you to gain a part of the rapidly growing online business regarding renting, reservations and bookings.  By online booking you provide a 24/7 reservation service. A high number of bookings are done outside the normal office hours. New statistics are showing an impressive increase of bookings which are made at weekends and evenings. The major reason is that customers want to book right away when they find the information needed. If the customers have to remember the information gathered after one night sleep the information will get lost and even worse customers might lose interest and decide not to book.  It will cost you money if you use a booking portal or advertising in general. If you are using an online booking program on your home page you will realize that saving payments to the middleman. Booking portals show several home pages so you and your competitors might be on the same booking portal. Meanwhile, if you use the booking portals you can collect all the internet surfers who would not find you home page themselves.  Your customer service will improve if you use an online booking system. The internet will provide your customers with a loud and clear overview of your availability quickly. If you offer online payment you will lower your risk too.  If you offer booking online your workload will get reduced. When you introduce your online service you will save time. Your booking system will make sure that you offer and get all kind of booking information. It includes availability and collection of information needed for you business so you do not have to ask for additional information later on. It can be a good idea for you also to send out automatically email notifications.  You will get your customer data structured. The customer details cannot be used for bookings only. It can also be used by sending out Christmas cards or making statistics overview. The statistics make it possible for you to optimize your business.  Up selling increase if you do everything right as online booking systems do many things automatically. Today your sales team might forget collecting important information while talking on the phone with your customers. The extra services that you offer are still convenient for your customer. An extra service could be a parking spot if we use a hotel as an example.  At off seasons you can pass your customers discount codes which they can use online. Just make sure your booking system can handle discount codes before you do include it in your business strategy. The</p>

<p>&#8220;BE A PART OF AMERICA&#8217;S FASTEST GROWING INDUSTRY — Earn thousands of dollars a month — from your home — selling travel!!!!&#8221;</p>
<p>You can find ads like that everywhere from the telephone pole on your corner to your grocery store bulletin board to your daily newspaper.</p>
<p>While you may find these ads appealing, especially if you can&#8217;t work outside your home, proceed with caution. Not all work-at-home opportunities deliver on their promises. As a matter of fact, most don&#8217;t. And that&#8217;s especially true in travel.</p>
<div id="AdShowcase_F1">
<div><a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20213935/#storyContinued">Story continues below ↓</a></p>
<hr size="1" noshade="noshade" />advertisement | <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26613008/">your ad here</a></p>
<div style="padding:0 10px 10px;">// &lt;![CDATA[//  &amp;amp;lt;script language=&#8221;JavaScript&#8221; type=&#8221;text/javascript&#8221;&amp;amp;gt; document.write(&#8216;&amp;amp;lt;a href=&#8221;http://clk.atdmt.com/CPA/go/157626894/direct/01/&#8221; target=&#8221;_blank&#8221;&amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;lt;img src=&#8221;http://view.atdmt.com/CPA/view/157626894/direct/01/&#8221;/&amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;gt;&#8217;); &amp;amp;lt;/script&amp;amp;gt;</div>
<hr size="1" noshade="noshade" /></div>
</div>
<p><a id="AdShowcase_F2" name="storyContinued"></a></p>
<p>In the past, the &#8220;standard&#8221; get-rich-quick schemes involved stuffing envelopes, assembling crafts, or medical billing. But today, it seems that travel opportunities are fast climbing to the top of the list.</p>
<p>Three years ago, I wrote a column on <a href="http://www.tripso.com/2005/01/top_5_travel_scams.php" target="_blank">travel scams</a> and &#8220;Becoming A Travel Agent&#8221; was in the top five. Unfortunately, things have not changed.</p>
<p>Each month, I get 10 or 12 emails inviting me to participate in some new travel scheme. Very few, if any, are legitimate. Consumers deceived by these ads have lost thousands of dollars, in addition to their time and energy.</p>
<p>Some are &#8220;travel clubs&#8221; where you pay a membership fee for &#8220;discounted&#8221; travel, but I would like to focus on the new scourge of the industry — the &#8220;Business Opportunity.&#8221;</p>
<p>Most of these &#8220;opportunities&#8221; are nothing more than Multi Level Marketing (MLM) which, as an industry, has very few success stories. They are reminiscent of Pyramid and Ponzi schemes where only the initial investors will make any substantial money. They claim that you can become a &#8220;credentialed&#8221; travel agent as soon as the check clears the bank. They promise upgrades, discounted air, free travel, and discounted travel for your friends and family. They claim you will be selling travel and earning a slice of the worldwide $525 billion dollar pie. (World Tourism Organization, 2003)</p>
<p>In reality, most times, you are buying a sub-site on a larger Web site and pressured to recruit more travel agents under you. There is very little travel sold by these &#8220;instant&#8221; agents. When you go to one of these sites like <a href="http://www.ytb.com/" target="_blank">YTB</a>, the focus is on joining the ranks and reaping the benefits. Notice the small link to actually book travel? These travel requests are not handled by the &#8220;agent&#8221; but by a call center. So, the consumer is once again duped. You think you&#8217;re working with an agent or someone you know, but in reality it&#8217;s a minimally-trained, cubicle-dwelling, order taker in a call center.</p>

<p>On several occasions, on a <a href="http://p197.ezboard.com/ftwcrossroadsdiscussionforumfrm36" target="_blank">public travel forum</a>, an advocate of the MLM business has argued the validity of his business. To me, all of the points seemed very Jim Jones-esque. When asked about the professionalism of these so-called agents, the reply was, &#8220;Who cares if they are &#8220;professionals&#8221; — people buy donuts from a donut shop.&#8221;</p>
<p>On the &#8220;credentials,&#8221; the reply was &#8220;Once the Affiliate Travel Agent or Platinum Travel Club Member creates the California minimum of $1,500 in travel sales, that person will receive our own official company issued Travel Seller ID Card that they may present to any travel vendor that will accept it.&#8221; So, the credential is their <em>own —</em> and not that of professional organizations such as <a href="http://www.iatan.org/welcome" target="_blank">IATA</a>, <a href="http://www.arccorp.com/" target="_blank">ARC</a>, <a href="http://www.ossn.com/" target="_blank">OSSN</a>, <a href="http://www.cruising.org/" target="_blank">CLIA</a>, <a href="http://www.artaonline.com/" target="_blank">ARTA</a>, or any of the other recognized travel industry associations.</p>

<p>When asked about the benefits of being involved with a MLM scheme, the response was very typical of those that are falling hard for the pitch:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;The best of all! Someone can become a Travel Agent instantly for anywhere from $99 a year to thousands of dollars — just depends — but — indeed, they are instantly a travel agent. No tests — no classes — no internships — nothing but paying a fee. Then they just need to get the word out and start booking travel. In the meantime, while waiting for customers to arrive — they can access Fam Trips and show their ID Card to Disney World and get in free. They can get upgrades at 4 and 5 star hotels by showing their ID card. The wonderful world of travel.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>Um, Mr. Jones, can I please have another glass of that purple Kool-Aid? As a legitimate travel agent and a consumer, I am not feeling too comfortable with this philosophy. Are you?</p>
<p>Still not convinced? Take a look at this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_QjFyEbGe4" target="_blank">YouTube</a> production from a pair of YTB travel agents. I am not rushing to the post office to mail them a check!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Cruise Line Executive on Travel Agents<br />
</strong><span id="more-3"></span><br />
The following is an open letter from <strong>Joseph A. Watters, President of Crystal Cruises</strong> to newspaper and magazine travel editors:</p>
<p>Dear &#8220;Travel Agent`s guide to success &#8220;Editor,</p>
<p>&#8220;Why should I use a travel agent?&#8221; As a veteran travel executive, that&#8217;s a question I&#8217;m often asked. Today, with the overwhelming number of sources for travel information (the Internet, cable television, newspapers, magazines, guidebooks, etc.), it&#8217;s no wonder the consumer is confused. Yet that&#8217;s precisely why the services of a professional travel consultant are more valuable than ever.</p>
<p>In January, the television news magazine, 20/20, reported the results of a test in which travel agents beat consumers at uncovering the best airfares. However, it is much more than the &#8220;lowest fare&#8221; that provides the compelling argument for a good travel agent.</p>
<p>The best thing an agent can do is to match up a traveler with the vacation that&#8217;s right for them.  The professional travel consultant builds relationships with their clients to learn their interests and lifestyles, as well as their dispositions.</p>
<p>Below is a list of some of the important services, which are either provided free or for a nominal charge, by travel agents:</p>
<p>1. Distilling the product information: Through an on-going and time-consuming process of familiarization, continuing education and customer feedback, the agent becomes a travel expert.</p>
<p>2. Investigating and supplying competitive information:  No single supplier is going to advise a consumer that a better route or a better fare is available on a competing carrier.</p>
<p>3. Staying abreast of the most current and timely promotions: Via daily faxes, agent-only e-mail transmissions, and their relationships with their district sales managers, agents are obtaining the most current promotional information.</p>
<p>4. Analyzing the current promotions: The cheapest is not always the best.</p>
<p>5. Clarifying the fine print, such as cancellation penalties and restrictions: Again, the benefits of a professional&#8217;s experience can save a traveler money . . . and headaches.</p>
<p>6. Making recommendations for travel-related options:  Travel agents share the to pack.</p>
<p>7. Simplifying the research and subsequent transaction:  Like a personal shopper, agents can provide one-stop shopping for travelers who require air arrangements, rental cars, cruise accommodations and hotel stays &#8211; with suggestions that are in the best interest of the client, not the supplier.</p>
<p>8. Enhancing the trip with value-added benefits and amenities:Â Agents can add to the client&#8217;s experience by sending a bottle of wine, providing a special land package, a specific escort or other customer amenities.</p>
<p>9. Using their clout to obtain the best possible in seemingly impossible situations:Â Whether it&#8217;s airline seats, hotel rooms or cruise space, the travel agent has more buying power than the consumer.</p>
<p>10. Getting problems resolved: The agent serves as the consumer&#8217;s advocate in the event something inadvertently goes wrong.<br />
The use of outside service providers for many transactions, such as tax preparation, isn&#8217;t questioned. Similarly, if one is going to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars, as well as a good chunk of valuable leisure time, it makes great sense to use a professional.</p>
<p>I hope you&#8217;ll consider sharing this information in future consumer interest columns.</p>
<p>Sincerely,<br />
JOSEPH A. WATTERS<br />
President</p>
